Fabrics from Africa. These are all 100% cotton. Some are wax prints. Some are fancy prints.

What are wax prints? In West Africa, a kaftan or caftan is a pull-over woman's dress. The word Kaftan (caftan) is originally North African. In French, this dress is called a boubou, pronounced boo-boo. The boubou is the traditional female attire in many West African countries including Senegal, Mali, and Ghana. In Nigeria, the wrapper (clothing) is most common. The boubou can be formal or informal attire. The formality of this dress depends upon the fabric used to create it. Wax prints are considered "formal" fabrics. Wax prints were originally made in Holland or England for the African trade. In a wax print, the pattern or design is printed on both sides of the cotton fabric. No wax has in fact been anywhere near them: they are resist-dyed fabrics, but the resist agent is resin, printed at high temperature on each face of the cloth. Wax prints are generally more expensive than fancy prints. They are now very much a part of the West African culture. Fancy print -- created by printing patterns on cloth. Unlike wax prints, the design is printed on one side of the cotton fabric. Fancy prints are made in both Europe and West Africa. A very few of the fabrics are made in India for the African trade. These are all large prints.
